Preparing pallets: dimensions, weight, packaging

Goods and pallet form one load unit

Your transport booking should describe the actual load unit: the pallet, goods and packaging together. Complete outside dimensions and total weight are needed for a useful assessment.

EPAL specifies a 1,200 × 800 mm footprint for its Euro pallet. The loaded unit may be larger because of packaging or overhanging goods.

Source: EPAL

Check packaging and fastening

Check that goods are stable on the load carrier and loose parts are suitably packaged for handover. Mark any characteristics important to the agreed handling.

Section 411 HGB sets out the sender's statutory obligations for packaging, marking and securing goods on load carriers. Preparation should suit the agreed transport.

Source: section 411 HGB

Measure after packaging

Measure length and width at the outermost points.

Measure total height from the bottom of the pallet.

Identify overhangs and fragile areas.

Record total weight including packaging and pallet.

Mark the unit as stackable only when it is suitable for stacking.

Plan how the pallet will enter the vehicle

Before collection, establish what handling equipment is available on site and what is needed at the destination. A tail lift, pallet truck or pallet exchange should be expressly agreed.

If new packaging changes the dimensions or more goods are added, update the shipment details before transport.

Read more: pallet transport and online booking.
